Gardening Is A Therapeutic Oasis

Cultivate a Love for Gardening

In the throes of the pandemic, with a seven-month-old baby girl, the world was an uncertain and fearful place. The threat of COVID-19 hung heavy in the air, new parenthood was still an uncharted terrain, and my professional future as a chamber of commerce executive seemed as unstable as a house of cards. As each day melded into the next, anxiety started to seep into every crevice of my being. I yearned for normalcy, for escape, for a safe haven.

Blossoming Bonds Amid the Blooms

And then, in the sweltering heat of June, a lifeline appeared – Lowe's garden center. Armed with an adventurous spirit, a stash of Lysol wipes, and Scarlett strapped securely into the race-car shopping cart, we ventured into this semi-safe sanctuary. The sparsely populated aisles served as a stage for my little girl to wave at people from a safe distance, her smile lighting up the leafy surroundings. It felt like a taste of normalcy, a glimpse into a world we once knew.

The Thrifty Green Thumb

As we delved into the green realm, we discovered the joy of $1 plants. With Scarlett's pointed finger as my guide, we amassed a treasure trove of flora. Unknowingly, we were sowing the seeds of our shared garden, an oasis amid the chaos that would serve as a canvas for countless shared memories. Whether it was deer feasting on our greens or the sizzling sun turning digging into a sweat-drenched ordeal, every encounter became an adventure, a lesson, a moment of connection.

Growing Lessons, Growing Love

As the seasons cycled, our gardening endeavors evolved. We started being more selective about our plants, mindful of our planting locations, and actively maintaining our burgeoning green kingdom. Scarlett got her flower bed filled with tomatoes, which she tended with her miniature watering can. Every plant in our garden had a name, a place, and a story. Scarlett and I, we became the guardians of our plant kingdom, fending off deer incursions and tending to our green charges with care and love.

Sowing Seeds of Joy

Even now, our garden serves as our playground, our classroom, our sanctuary. From water fights to plant-naming ceremonies, every moment in our garden is a celebration of life, connection, and resilience. Scarlett's first tomatoes just bloomed, marking another milestone in our shared journey. We have learned that gardening is not about perfection but about the shared joy of nurturing life, embracing imperfections, and reveling in the process.

Cultivating a Love for Gardening

So, if you're thinking about diving into the world of gardening, here are a few nuggets of wisdom:

  • Be Prepared: Equip yourself with bug spray and water – essential companions for Georgia's hot, bug-filled summers.
  • Nourish the Soil: Good soil is key to thriving plants. Invest time and effort into enriching your soil with necessary nutrients.
  • Location, Location, Location: Plants have their preferences for sun and shade. Make sure to match your plants with their preferred conditions.
  • Expect the Unexpected: From deer attacks to surprise blooms, gardening is full of surprises. Embrace the unpredictability and enjoy the journey.
  • Invest in Good Tools: A garden cart and quality gardening tools can make your gardening experience significantly more enjoyable.

Remember, gardening is not about crafting the perfect landscape; it's about carving out your slice of happiness, one plant at a time. It's about the shared laughter, the lessons learned, the connections deepened. It's about making memories in the soil and under the sun. And as Scarlett and I can attest, it's about finding joy in the smallest of sprouts and the biggest of blooms.
